- HEP Emergency Shelter Resident

I grew up in Pinellas County and got mixed up with the wrong crowd at a young age. My first time in jail was when I was just 15 years old. At that age, you’re just trying to fit in and make friends — only to realize too late that you chose the wrong ones. I spent much of the next decade in and out of prison.

When I wasn’t incarcerated, I stayed with family members or in shelters. Eventually, I  connected with a case manager who referred me to HEP, and in October 2025, I entered  HEP’s Emergency Housing Program.

Shortly after I arrived at HEP, I lost my vision due to advanced cataracts and had to undergo surgery. The HEP team stood by me every step of the way. Bruce, HEP’s  Healthcare Navigator, transported me to and from my appointments, and Tom, HEP’s on site LPN, helped me manage my medications and answered any questions I had. I was also able to see a volunteer optometrist, Dr. Williams, who prescribed me new eyeglasses,  without even needing to leave campus.

While I continue working through a temp agency for supplemental income, the staff in  HEP’s Workforce Development Center helped me update my resume and apply for permanent positions. The peaceful, quiet atmosphere at HEP has allowed me to truly focus on rebuilding my life. I was even able to pick up interview clothes from the Thrift  Store.

The team at HEP is friendly, supportive, and genuinely invested in helping people succeed.  Every resource a person could need is available here.
